How confidential is a psychiatrist?
I've been contemplating seeing a psychiatrist for some time now after being told it would be a good idea from a couple of my friends. However my father and I are gun enthusiasts, I don't really want to be put on any meds, and I don't really anyone to know if I do go to see one. What I'm wondering is if I get diagnosed with something if a.) it'll keep me from owning a gun in the distant future (I live in Michigan), b.) if anything they say would potentially get out, and c.) if there's like any record of me going to see someone? I don't think there's anything wrong with me but I would like to know this because I'm curious and would like to at least see what s/he has to say.
They are very confidential. The only thing they are ever allowed to divulge is if someone is about to be hurt or killed. So unless you're homicidal, suicidal, or want to injure someone....then you're good to go.
If you don't want meds, though.....I'd suggest seeing psychologist as opposed to a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists usually want to medicate everyone. Psychologists focus more on behavioral aspects.
Go for it! You'll be glad you did.
